We are now more than half way through the year and you probably made some new year's resolutions last January such as: eat better, exercise more, spend less money, self-care, read more books, learn a new skill, get a new job, make new friends, get a new hobby, focus more on appearance etc. (according to YouGov poll these are the most popular new-year's resolutions for 2018).
Before I share with you the 3 Steps to Stay on track and Keep Your Resolution let us first look at what might be getting in the way.
1. You made a resolution but you do not really believe you can accomplish it
2. You are not sure that the grass is greener on the other side.
3. You are too busy doing other things and you have lost track.
These obstacles are very common and the statistics show that only 8% of people actually keep their resolutions.
Are you among the 8%? If not, below are 3 steps to stay on track and keep your resolution:
Step #1: Implement 'The One Thing' principle and stick to it
'The One Thing' principle will stop you from being distracted by other things, which move you away from your chosen resolution.
'The One Thing' principle is the brainchild of Gary Keller who describes his book as follows: “The New-York Times bestseller that will help you find the one thing you need to do that will make everything else easier.”
When you apply 'The One Thing' you simplify your life by remaining focused on one task only and you stay on track. You only move onto other tasks once you have fully completed the first task.
Take some time to find the one thing you need to do now in order to keep your resolution and make everything else easier, may it be in your personal life, your health, your finances, your contribution, career etc.
For example if your resolution is to improve your finances:
What is the one thing you need to do to ensure you have more money at end of the month? Once you are clear about that one thing, take action! You intuitively know what it is, it is the thing you procrastinate on the most!
Step #2: Create small action steps to accomplish your resolution
You might want to experience a dramatic change in your life and it may seem daunting. Chunking it down into smaller steps will make it more manageable.
For example if your resolution is to eat well: you might want to look at your shopping habits, read about nutrition, cut down on unhealthy fatty foods, eat more fruits and vegetables, cut down on sugar, drink more water etc. However, start with one thing which will move you into action.
What is the one thing you could do which will make everything else easier regarding eating well?
Step #3: Revisit your WHY
Have you lost motivation? It is because you have lost track of your WHY; why you wanted this new resolution and what it means to you?
In order to remain motivated, you can visualize your resolution being accomplished, how does it make you feel? If it feels good, get back on track and keep going. If it does not move you and it is not a burning desire it will be harder to make it a reality, albeit not impossible!
