We all have different definitions of success, however in this blog article I want to share with you my preferred definition and why it matters. I take you through a thinking process, which will help you choose your goal wisely...
My preferred definition of success comes from Earl Nightingale, who said: “Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.” In his definition of success Earl Nightingale teaches us that a worthy goal is necessary in order to achieve success, therefore it is important that you choose your goal wisely!
1. Why should your goal be worthy of you?
Your goal must be worthy of you because of the amount of time and energy you will put into its accomplishment. When you study people who have achieved great success, in terms of making a difference in the world, you will find that they did not achieve success in a straight line; indeed, they had to go through many roadblocks in order to reach the mountain top. Therefore, your goal must really be worthy of you because your persistence, faith, patience, perseverance and courage will be tested along the way.
Walt Disney who created with his brother one of the best known motion-picture production companies in the world and the founder of Disneyland and Walt Disney World did not have an overnight success. In fact, he had to go through many failed attempts before the cartoon character Mickey Mouse was revered by the public and became a household name. Walt Disney famously said “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”
2. What is a goal that is worthy of you?
I believe it is a goal you feel deep in your heart you wish to achieve. Note that I used the word feel in order to describe a goal that is worthy of you. This is very important because you may have a goal in your head however if you do not feel it in your heart it will not give you the fulfilment that you seek: a goal which will satisfy your heart and soul. Furthermore, you know that you have the right goal when you procrastinate or experience a lot of fear with regard to its achievement and your success.
3. What you seek is fulfilment
A goal that is worthy of you will give you a lot of fulfilment. There are countless stories of successful achievers who have spent many years chasing one goal after the other because they were never satisfied. A goal worthy of you is one when you will feel full satisfaction, fulfilment and contentment.
It is easy sometimes when you are successful not to acknowledge the smallest success anymore however when you do acknowledge the smallest success from a place of gratitude your spirit feels joyful. If this applies to you, I recommend that you rejoice and acknowledge your successful steps to date, they are worthy of you…
